Do UK citizens need a visa for Vietnam?

In short: British citizens can enter Vietnam visa-free for up to 45 days (until 14 March 2028). If you plan to stay longer than 45 days, you need an e-visa (up to 90 days) before you fly. The exemption does not apply to British National (Overseas) passports.

When you don't need a visa

  • You hold a British citizen passport
  • Your stay is 45 days or less, counting the day you arrive
  • Your passport is valid for at least 6 months from arrival
  • You have a return or onward ticket

When you need an e-visa

  • Staying more than 45 days, for example a long trip or a few months in Da Nang or Hoi An
  • Travelling on a BN(O) passport
  • Working, studying or doing business beyond a short visit

The e-visa is valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Multiple entry is useful if you'll pop over to Cambodia, Laos or Thailand and come back.

Common mistakes I see from UK applicants

  • Counting the days wrong: 45 days includes your arrival day. Book your flight out on day 45 at the latest.
  • Assuming you can extend in Vietnam: plan the e-visa before you fly if there's any chance you'll stay longer.
  • Middle names left out on the e-visa. Copy your name exactly as printed in the passport.
