How to enter your name on the Vietnam e-visa

In short: copy your name exactly as it is printed in your passport. Surname goes in the surname field. All given names, including any middle name, go in the given name field in the same order as your passport. If the form won't accept a hyphen or an accent, type a space or the plain letter instead. That's normal and accepted.

The two name fields

Field on the formWhat to typeExample passport: SMITH-JONES / Emma Louise
SurnameYour surname / last name, as printedSMITH JONES
Middle and given nameEvery given name, in passport orderEMMA LOUISE

The label "middle and given name" follows the Vietnamese naming order (family name, middle name, given name). It does not mean you have to put your middle name first. Type your given names exactly as they appear on your passport, from left to right.

Hyphens, apostrophes and accents

  • Hyphen (SMITH-JONES): the form doesn't accept it, so type a space: SMITH JONES. Your passport's machine-readable lines at the bottom already show a hyphen as a gap, so the names still match.
  • Apostrophe (O'NEILL): leave it out and type ONEILL, or use a space if that's how it reads in the bottom lines of your passport.
  • Accents (MÜLLER, JOSÉ): type the plain letters as they appear in the machine-readable lines, for example MUELLER or MULLER, JOSE.
  • No surname (one name only): put the name in the field your passport uses and leave the other empty if the form allows it, or message me first.

Mistakes that actually cause problems

  • Swapping surname and given name
  • Leaving out a given name that is printed in the passport
  • Using a nickname or a married name that isn't in the passport
  • A typo, such as one letter wrong or missing

A missing hyphen is not one of them. A swapped or missing name is, and airlines and immigration can refuse you for it. If your approved e-visa already has a wrong name, it can be amended. See how to fix an e-visa mistake.

FAQ

My surname has a hyphen but the Vietnam e-visa form won't accept it. What do I do?

Type a space instead of the hyphen, for example SMITH JONES for SMITH-JONES. This matches the machine-readable lines of your passport and is accepted at check-in and immigration.

Do I put my middle name before my first name on the Vietnam e-visa?

No. Type your given names in the same order as your passport, first name then middle name, all in the “middle and given name” field.

My name has an accent (é, ü, ñ). How do I type it?

Use the plain letters as shown in the two machine-readable lines at the bottom of your passport photo page.

What if my approved e-visa has my name wrong?

Don't travel on it. A name amendment costs $75 for entry through an international airport. Send me your e-visa and passport photo first.
